FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

rule

How do I book the studio?
View the studio’s calendar to check for available space. You can navigate through the year and request a booking by clicking on any available (white) space. The form will ask for your contact and booking details and once submitted will be confirmed via email within 24 hours.

How many studios do you have?
Queen Street Studio manages two rehearsal studios:

  • Queen Street Studio; 12-16 Queen Street, Chippendale
  • Studio 14 – FraserStudios; 14 Kensington Street, Chippendale

Are all the bookings displayed in the calendar confirmed?
Yes – the calendar is up to date and displays all confirmed bookings, although there is sometimes a last minute change or cancellation. It is a policy of Queen Street Studio that all bookings are made on a ‘first-in’ basis, therefore we do not negotiate changes in existing bookings with new booking requests.

What hire rate am I?
An individual or group who is not a current member of the studio is charged $45 per hour to use the facility. The member rates are determined on your proposed activity for which you are making the booking. An individual working in the studio alone is considered as ‘solo’; a group with no funding or budget is considered as ‘group’; an organisation or group who has been funded or has a budget to spend on the project is considered as ‘funded’; an individual or group who collect fees from participants or from people entering the studio is considered as ‘commercial’. These rates are determined on a booking-by-booking basis.

Do I have to sign a contract or agreement?
Yes – a booking form will be sent to you via email as confirmation of your booking. This document includes a link to our terms and conditions of your hire and must be signed and returned to the studio before you commence your first booking.

I need some time to set up for my class, do I need to consider this when I book the studio?
Yes – as the times you book indicate the moment you step into the building until the time you step out.

How do I pay for my hire?
You will be issued with an invoice via email that will have our 3 payment options that include EFT, cash in the studio and cheque or money order through the post. We do not have credit card facilities or change for cash payments.

How many people can use an organisation membership?
Up to 8 individuals are able to use an organisation membership. All invoices generated for program registrations or studio bookings will be addressed to the organisation’s account that holds the membership.

How do I get keys?
On your first booking the studio management will open the facility and induct you into the studio space. Here they will either issue you with a full set of keys for the duration of your bookings or give you a temporary set (for bookings during business hours) and instructions on how the secure the building. After securing the building, the temporary key sets are to be deposited into the post box located on the front door of the building.

Do you have Internet access/phone line in the studio?
WiFi is available from the common area of FraserStudios.

Can I give my keys to other people?
No – you are solely responsible for the safety and security of the studio and building for the duration of your hire as per the Studio’s terms and conditions.

Why was no-one at the studio when I came to visit?
The management of the studio does not work from the premises and therefore need to be contacted in advance to arrange studio inspections.

Can I organise an inspection of the studio?
Absolutely. Call James on 0419 825 895 or email james@queenstreetstudio.com. Inspections are subject to studio and manager availability.

If I don’t have access to the Internet, can I make a booking over the phone?
Absolutely – but the manager you ring may not be able to check studio availability at the time of your call.

Can I cancel my booking?
Sure – but you have to give us at least 48 hours notice without it incurring a charge. Cancellations made between 24-48 hours of the booking will incur a 50% cancellation fee of total hire, less than 24 hours – 100% of total hire.

Do you do regular bookings?
Yes – we have members who run weekly classes in the studio and hold bookings at the same time each week for the entire year. We are happy to book regular timeslots for periods extending from a month to a whole year.

Do you have weekly rates?
Yes we do – and are usually based on a 8 hour x 5 day week booking requests – but you need to contact James on 0419 825 895 or james@queenstreetstudio.com to discuss your proposed hire for an accurate quote to be given.

Where can I park?
During business hours the Chippendale area is very congested and on street parking is nearly impossible. The service station on Regent St has a tiny paid car parking section on its roof. Otherwise we strongly suggest catching the many public transport options available at Railway Square and Central Station. Outside of business hours and on weekend the Chippendale area is usually quiet – with on street parking more accessible.

Can I bring a sound system into the studio?
City of Sydney noise regulations permit us from using any other sound system apart from the one that is currently in the studio.

Does your studio accommodate tap or flamenco dance?
Sorry – our rehearsal studio has a tarquette dance floor that permits only soft flat shoes. Our polished timber floor is only accessible in the kitchen/lounge area and are not to be damaged or scratched. We suggested you use rehearsal or portable flooring and rehearsal shoes if you wish to dance flamenco or tap in the studio.

Can I black out the studio?
The studio has large north facing windows that span right across the back of the studio with black out blinds installed. These blinds are effective, but do not give absolute black out. The ‘studio specs’ page includes dimensions of the windows if you plan to bring in any additional black out materials, although we do suggest to artists requiring total darkness to hire the studio in the evening as the external light is minimal.

Can I hold an event/performance at Queen Street Studio?
Queen Street Studio does not hold ‘a place of public entertainment’ license. The City of Sydney does not allow us to operate performances or events in the studio that either charge an entry fee, exceed 30 people or sells liquor. Special licences can be granted for exceptions but need to be arranged with the City of Sydney well in advance.

I have an event I want to promote, how do I get the information out to your membership?
Queen Street Studio publishes a bi-monthly newsletter titled QSS News, which is circulated to its membership via email. Content can be submitted to james@queenstreetstudio.com but it may be subject to an editing process. Otherwise we tend not to send out random promotion material unless it offers exceptional benefit to our membership… i.e.: free stuff!

I am thinking of holding a class for the public, can you help me promote it?
Absolutely – members conducting regular classes at Queen Street Studio can publish their information on the ‘classes’ page of our website and feature in the bi-monthly newsletter QSS News. Members are also permitted to leave marketing material on the studio noticeboard or their flyers in the studio. Management will also assist you in advise on how to market your class to the general public or the performing arts community too.

I am not a performing artist but want to support Queen Street Studio, do you accept donations?
Yes we accept $50 ‘supporter memberships’ that can be made via our ‘Become a Member’ page on this website… as well as random cash donations from people who want to keep us running. Contact sam@queenstreetstudio.com for information.
