Queen Street Studio is a response to the lack of affordable and appropriate space for artists in Sydney to practise their craft. The studios are managed by local artists Sam Chester (Choreographer) and James Winter (Theatre Director) who are supported by a Board of Management made up of industry peers.
Opened in June 2005 from initial financing from Peter Winter (in the form of a benevolence from his father Jack Winter and father-in-law Jack Hart), the organisation traded for 4 years from the top-floor of a warehouse on Queen Street in Chippendale. Over that time the studio serviced 18,132 artists with rehearsal studio space.
Since September 2008, Queen Street Studio has managed the FraserStudios facility for Frasers Property and as of June 2009, the organisation moved its entire operation to the Kensington Street site while expanding its services to include the Visual Art community in Sydney.
