spaceAID 2008 exhibition/auction:
7pm, Saturday May 17
In May 2007, auctioneer Paul Clarke called the room to attention and signalled the beginning of the inaugural exhibition/auction – raising funds to support the activities of Queen Street Studio; a non-profit creative development and rehearsal facility run by artists for artists.
spaceAID ’08 continues the celebration: the potential of space . . . celebrating how artists can claim an empty space – and using their imaginations – fill it. From nothing to everything; a blank canvas or an empty rehearsal room, artists can transform space into something of unique beauty – of complete terror – of great understanding.
DEVELOP // ART // SPACE
spaceAID ’07 was a huge success for all concerned and enabled Queen Street Studio to purchase a professional tarquette dancefloor for its members.
This year, spaceAID is being curated by Samantha Wright of AFR BOSS.
Her idea is to link performing artists with visual artists – exploring the ways in which visual artists interpret the performance discipline. Queen Street Studio would like to thank the performing artists who have allowed these collaborations to evolve and for allocating such unprecedented access to their classes and allowing the visual artists to delve into their development process.
The enigmatic and charismatic Paul Clarke has kindly agreed to curate the proceedings again this year.
Surprise performances and the silky vocal sounds of Tam Morris will feature on the night. Local Chippendale artistic catering will be provided by Gourmet Pallete. Check the menu here.
Queen Street Studio – established in 2005 – was created in support of Sydney’s performing arts community whose spaces are continually being shut down redeveloped and genetrified. Queen Street Studio supports the artists’ potential by providing a space in which to create.
spaceAID 2007 had the priviledge of being curated by the delightful cartoonist Reg Lynch of Sydney Morning Herald and Bulletin Magazine fame and driven by Boss Magazine art director Samantha Wright.
The 2007 event attracted around 30 established and emerging visual artists – most of whom created work especially for this event. Responding to the idea of space and performance, this was a unique collaboration of visual and performing arts where all work was auctioned at the event. Proceeds went to the potential of space and the potential of an artist’s imagination – when an ‘idea’s time has come’ (Victor Hugo).
