Emma is a Sydney-based dance artist. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Dance and Grad Dip Ed (Dance/Drama) from the University of Western Sydney in 1996.
Her dance practice questions the limitations of dance and where she as a person fits into it all. In 2000, she co founded The Fondue Set with Jane McKernan and Elizabeth Ryan. Since then, The Fondue Set has been her main focus having reached dizzying heights creating and performing 7 full-length works and performing all or bits of these shows in Sydney, Melbourne, Paris, London and Japan.
They are currently in development for their new work No Success Like Failure, which will be performed in June 2008 at The Studio, Sydney Opera House.
Outside The Fondue Set, Emma has squeezed in choreographing the film clip Red Robin Heart for Sydney-based band Pip Branson Corporation, which was invited to be screened as part of the Dance on Screen Festival, Sydney Festival 2008.
During 2007, Emma received a research grant through Critical Path to explore and further develop her solo practice utilizing her work in The Fondue Set as a starting point. This instigated her latest solo work, Pavlov’s Dog, which was then performed as part of the “We Like Short Shorts” season at Dancehouse, Melbourne 2007.
She has presented her earlier solo work Lost Property at Omeo Dance Studios, Sydney and later remounted this onto 18 women and performed at the Seymour Centre, Sydney 2006.
In 2006, Emma also participated in the National Choreographic Laboratory with Ros Crisp as mentor as part of Critical Path. Previous to this she has performed in Unfinished Business: X Marks the Spot with Version 1.0 at The Studio, Sydney Opera House (2005). Emma has also performed in Crowds with Chunky Moves (2004) and presented many solo improvisations at Rushing for the Sloth, Omeo Dance, Sydney and The Big Schloss, Performance Space, Sydney.
She currently lectures in Dance including technique and composition at ACPE and is a board member for Ausdance NSW representing NSW based independent dance artists. Miguel Gutierrez says she’d go off in New York. |
