2008 Curator’s letter:

Firstly, to all the artists participating, thank you for giving your time to this space.

If I was asked why I want to curate spaceAID ’08,  I could reply that its because two people I care about have invested a lot of time, money, energy and emotion in Queen Street Studio (QSS). I could say that its a great opportunity for me to see if I can successfully curate an exhibition. Or I could even say that it’s because I am a frustrated performer whose dreams of starring on Broadway were never realised. All of these reasons are true to a certain extent.

The real reason however that I want to be involved in spaceAID ’08, is because I believe in community – the community of performing artists that make up the membership of QSS; the community of painters, photographers, sculptors and illustrators who are contributing to this exhibition; and the wider community in which we all live and work. The state government has often overlooked the less glamorous inner-city suburbs such as Chippendale but these suburbs have always maintained a culture of encouraging artistic endeavour. If we are to see that culture continue in the future then places like Queen Street Studio need to survive and thrive.

I am truly excited about spaceAID ’08. Some amazing visual artists have agreed to be part of this event, producing original work inspired by the performing artists who use the Queen Street Studio. I am hoping that the work exhibited and auctioned at spaceAID ’08 will closely reflect the creative activity that takes place at the studio every day but that is rarely witnessed by the general public.

So join us on the 17th of May.

You may get to take home a great piece of art, but even if you don’t, you will definitely have a great time and contribute to a very special community.
